This is one of the first projects we did this semester. For this fabric drawing we had a fabric hang down form the ceiling and we had to choose a view to draw from. I really liked this project because we got to try three different types of drawing tools and picked the one we thought would be the best in our opinion. The three we practiced with was white charcoal, white prisma, and black charcoal. That is also the order of the ones I used at top. For my final I ended up using white charcoal. I chose the white charcoal because it made the highlights really bright and also it was much easier to blend and make very smooth transitions. Value was a very big part in this project because the one thing you need to add to fabric drawing to make it realistic is the creases. Value is a big help in making the creases with using the highlights and the shadows. The project we were supposed to pick one part of the fabric and just draw it up close. I'm kind of glad I drew the whole thing because in my practice with the white prisma I did focus on one part and you couldn't really tell what it was. That's why it is important to make sketches and practices before your final because it helps make your final even better and it prepares you for some problems you may face and helps you practice with the media you chose to use and maybe not be used to using. I also choose this for my first question for my final because this is one of my projects I was proud of and I think turned out being very successful.
Question 1
My favorite style of art and my favorite type to do is things very colorful and bright. That's why I really enjoyed the media prisma color pencils because they are very pigmented and really make whatever you are drawing stand out. Also with these colors you don't just have to use the colors of the actual object you can add colors that blend well that you wouldn't think you would see in that object in real life. I think success as an artist is when you personally are proud of what you did and are very happy with the outcome. Being artists is very rewarding because its something you can be really good at and have a very good talent and that's also something rewarding especially when other people acknowledge it. In my opinion I love taking art classes because I find drawing and painting really fun and I like having that option during school because its a free period to do something you actual like doing. The most important skills in art is to before any project you are trying to do, don't use the first idea that comes to mind think of at least 10 and see which one is the most creative one you could think of. I've learned a lot from this class and it has definitely made me so much better in all the drawing techniques. For this question I've added pictures below from my look at this view project because from what I was saying in the beginning about really liking how nice the prisma color pencils work and look like. For my look at this view project we had to pick something showing part of it closer up and the rest of it more in the background smaller, so I chose a giraffe and the nose is the part that was supposed to be close up and then the rest of the head and neck farther back.
Question 4
Sometimes before we did a project we would do a mini project to get comfortable with the media of what our final was going to be like. One of these mini projects that were very beneficial was for the opacity project before we did our final we practice with candies. So on each of our tables we had a handful of candy on a white piece of paper. This really helped me because we used clay pastels for the candy drawings and it made me want to use it for my final as well because it was easier to blend and I liked the light and smooth colors there were. Also drawing something you can see through like glass is a lot more difficult than you think so It was very helpful that we had this practice. Another mini project that helped was in the very beginning of the semester before we did the contour line project of our classroom we did a practice with drawing someone in the groups book bag. I just wish we had a mini project before all of our finals but we didn't have time but it would be beneficial because some things like the scratchboard I have never done anything like that before so it wouldn't have been helpful to practice before. It could have been more successful.
Question 6
My favorite medium to work with is definitely prisma colored pencils. When I first used these we just drew a pumpkin and grapes just mini things to practice with them. These did not end up turning out the way I wanted at all cause the key to prisma colors is to have multiple layers and add the light colors in first and fill in the darks towards the end. This was very good practice before our look at this view project because I chose to use the media prisma colors. The thing I like most about prisma is that no matter how dark the colors you use it is always bright and really makes your object stand out. The colors are really pigmented which really catches anyone's eye. Some of the disadvantages of them is that if you mess up it is very difficult to fix especially if its with one of the darker colors. It also takes a lot of layers to have no parts of the paper showing and to really blend all the colors you are using together.
Question 7
The last project we did in this class was the scratchboard. In my opinion this was my least successful project I did In this class. I just feel I picked a idea for this project that is very difficult to show texture and have lots of different value. This idea could have spent more time and took my time on making it more neat and clean. Since I rushed it most of it blends together and their is not much of a contrast in the value. But some disadvantages of scratchboard is that if you add too much white you can't take it back and also it is very obvious when your lines aren't straight or if you make a mistake. I feel something that could have made this project more successful is have more practice on scratchboard and more experience. If I were to do another one of these projects I feel I could have made it better because I would have already done one and I would have known what to expect. Just because I feel this was my least successful project doesn't mean I didn't like the project I thought it was really fun and a cool idea and I'm glad we did it for one of our projects.
