First day activity
The first day of class we were given the task to draw four things, our hand, our partners face, a shoe, and perspective. This was difficult for me because I have not done a lot of drawing since the last class I have taken. Therefore I didn't remember the correct shading work, the placement of the face features, and the perspective was the most challenging. We are doing more work on perspective in class and value with shading so my skills should improve soon.
Value Practice
We started our practice with a value chart. The key to using value is the pressure you put with your pencil, the lighter the value you want the lighter amount of pressure you use. Also wherever the shadow is you want it to be dark to really show that. We then did so practice shapes, I chose a sphere and a cone. Then after practice our shapes we did the actual drawing of the two shapes overlapping each other. We did that so we could really show the shadow coming off the shape that's in front of the other. For this we put the shapes on a sheet of white paper so those shadows really popped. The most difficult part about this was trying to blend my shading without any tools.
Value Drawing of Objects
For this we put two random objects on white constructions paper so you could see the shadows easier. Our two objects were obviously a pencil pouch and a soccer ball. Shading was difficult without any tools, but the most difficult was doing the design on the soccer ball.
Perspective Studies 1pt, 2pt, 3pt
For this sketchbook activity we practiced perspective. The first 3 pt is from worms eyed view and the second is birds eyed view. I prefer the birds eye view in the three point, but I find two point is the easiest for me to use. I am really glad we went through all of them and learned how to draw the basics so for our next project I won't have to worry about the technical aspect of it.
Lego Drawing
For this mini project we had to as a group build some short of statue with legos. Ive never made anything with legos but to was really just stacking and leaving holes to add those shadows. For taking the reference photo we had to make it where the perspective really showed. This image was able to be created using only two vanishing points which is two point perspective. This was fun to draw but the circles on the legos are difficult to draw especially at those weird angles from the perspective.
Four Pen Value Charts
For this we practiced each technique in pen by forming a value chart. My favorite technique is stippling, it takes the longest but I think it looks the best. For the fourth one we got to pic any type of design. I chose the letter S for mine. To get the value using the pen you just have to keep adding layers until it is as dark as you want. And for the opposite when you need the light you have very few layers so it shows that's where the light hits it.
4 video drawings
For this we had to watch 4 tutorial videos to show us how to draw texture with the pen. My favorite were the cylinders and I feel that’s what turned out the best for me.
Pen and Ink Final
These are my brainstorming ideas, compositional sketches, and practice sketch. Also reference photos.
Self Evaluation:
1) I didn't use a specific technique for any of my parts of my picture. I used more of my practice from the four videos we watched with the texture drawing practice. For Little Red Riding hood's cloak I chose to do the swirls to show a fiber texture and with adding the value it turned out better than my practice sketch did. For the background I chose to do a light hatching, because since my trees and path were so dark I needed a contrast in value.
2)For this project I used perspective by making the trees in the background smaller and darker to really emphasize the perspective. I also made the path go from very large to really little as it went off the page. Perspective is important because it creates an illusion of depth on a 2D surface. It is also important because it is a skill that gives you the ability to look at things from certain point of views.
3) Texture is so important in art work because it gives more quality and reality to it. Texture is one of seven elements such as line, color, shape, form, and value. Texture was more important in pen and ink because you only have two colors to work with. It also brings attention to certain details on your piece. For texture on my project I put divots on the trees in the front. I used it in her cloak and the wolfs fur. The wolf was the most challenging because not only was drawing him difficult, the addition of fur was difficult.
4) Value is important because it shows you the illusion of light and where the shadows are. It is extremely important with pen and ink because using pen your not going to get a lot of different color, same as with pencil. However to give those different values its all about the pressure you put on your pen. I made the trees darker in the back to help show the perspective but also to add value. If a tree branch was overlapping another tree, the tree being overlapped needs to be darker showing that its behind the branch. I made the middle of my path lighter than the ends because they are behind the huge trees causing a shadow.
5) I think my project turned out a lot better than expected. I could have added more things to the picture so there is not as much blank space. Or I could have made the picture bigger to avoid having it.
6)If I could do this project again I would research more videos on how to draw fur. One thing I struggled with in this project was the wolf. It was also difficult because he is so small it is hard to add that little detail. I would also add more shadows, I didn't add any coming off the trees. The last thing I would change is not leaving so much blank space, I would want to fill the whole page.
7) I chose to do Little Red Riding Hood. In the story she walks through the forest to get to her grandmother's house. While doing that a wolf spots her and follows her, So the scene I captured was her walking the path in the forest and the wolf hiding behind one of the trees watching her.
8) In class before we started the pen and ink project we did pen value charts, four videos practicing texture, and shapes practicing the techniques. This is all very important to do before a big project for one just to get used to drawing things in pen. With pen sometimes little scribbles turns out to look super good with all the layers and value you add to it. Thats not really the case with other drawing utensils. Also in the videos we watched they practiced with textures wood and fur. I ended up having those in my final so those would not have been as successful without that practice. Lastly with that practice I learned you can use simple designs and turn them into a technique if you do the value right. With that knowledge I used a technique with swirls to make her cloak and that's one of my favorite parts.
9) With this project I have learned that research and watching videos is really beneficial. I used a reference photo for almost everything I drew in this final project. This definitely made this project more successful than me just imagining what it looks like in my head. This was my first pen and ink drawing and I feel it was successful I just need a few more things to work on.

Cupcake Drawing
For this mini project we had to pick a picture out of cupcakes and ice cream cones. This was for us to practice with prisma color pencils. They are my favorite because i like drawing with color. I really like how it turned out.
